Monday saw a landmark moment in the UK’s energy supply as the National Grid became able to obtain balancing services from renewable sources for the first time. Balancing services are reactive, short-term mechanisms, used to ensure that the security and quality of electricity supply across Britain is maintained. Traditionally this service has been provided by gas or coal power plants, but as the older plants become obsolete, there is a need to find new ways to support the grid.
We believe that the inclusion of solar, wind and wave generators as providers of balancing services is a positive step in the transition away from fossil fuels, helping Britain to reach its 2050 net zero emission target.
